SACRAMENTO – Assemblywoman Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield) took her oath of office today and officially began her third term in the California State Assembly. Thanks to statewide voters, she returns to office with three additional Republican members, which breaks the 2/3 majority liberals enjoyed for the past two years. “I am honored to continue to serve the people of Kern County and I am grateful for the opportunity to fight to defend our interests here in Sacramento,” said Assemblywoman Shannon Grove. “These added members will help us prevent tax increases, stop job-killing business regulations stifling our states economy, and defend our rights and liberties being chipped away bit by bit by an overbearing state government.” With these goals in mind, Grove’s first act of the new session is to co-author Senate Bill 5 (Vidak)/ Assembly Bill 23 (Patterson) to repeal a new gas tax to be imposed on all transportation fuels starting next month. This tax comes from the Air Resources Board, which has expanded the state’s cap-and-trade program (authorized by Assembly Bill 32 in 2006) to include gasoline, diesel, and natural gas. Oil suppliers must pay the tax, whose higher costs will almost certainly be passed on to consumers. Californians already pay the nation’s highest gas tax at 72 cents per gallon. This new tax is estimated to cost 15 to 76 cents extra per gallon. “Californias future prosperity and success is dependent on quality, inexpensive energy,” said Grove. “This fuel tax not only increases the cost of doing business, it directly takes money from the pockets of middle and low income working families.” During Grove’s first two terms in office, she authored legislation to streamline government spending, mandate transparency within state agencies, as well as make elected officials comply with the same rules they mandate on California businesses. Like many legislative proposals designed to require accountability for state spending, such bills were rejected by the Democrat-controlled majority party in Sacramento. Assemblywoman Grove was re-elected with nearly 75 percent of the vote this past November. She continues to represent most of Kern County; including the communities of Bakersfield, Ridgecrest, Tehachapi, Taft and Frazier Park/Lebec.
