SACRIFICE OR SACRILEGE? The Sage or mystic has nothing to sacrifice and nothing to gain.Rajaque Rahman tries to decipher the symbolic ritual of sacrificing a goat to commemorate Eid –ul- Adha”- Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son for the love of god. Divine revelations come in the form of symbolism, but we don’t understand the meanings and the real purpose gets buried in rituals. Ismail was the son and most loved possession of Ibrahim, before god’s message came to slit his throat with a knife and sacrifice him. Because Ibrahim overcame his selfish attachment to his son and was willing to kill him, god relented and sent a male sheep instead. The meaning is clear, we need to identify our sacrifice; power, family, ego, jealousy, lust, attachments or obsessions – in short cravings for our sense of pleasure. But as usual religion is used as a scapegoat, while people still hang on to their loved attachments. Everyone wants to take the easy way out by sacrificing a poor dumb goat, which has no emotional attachment to them. It actually goes against the “Quranic” injunction of “Thou shall not kill” by committing butchery of millions of animals or unleashing terror. –Speaking Tree-
