SACROILIAC JOINT DYSFUNCTION THE SACRO ILIAC JOINT (SIJ) The sacroiliac joint connects the sacrum and the pelvis. It allows for transfer of forces and weight from upper body to be transmitted through the spine pelvis and legs. It allows for 2-4 degrees of movement on the sagittal plane and is supplied by the lumbosacral nerve root. SACROILIAC JOINT DYSFUNCTION Sacroiliac joint dysfunction is pain in the sacroiliac joint region which can be caused by abnormal or minimal movement in the sacroiliac joint. Sacroiliac joint dysfunction is common in many sports. COMMON CAUSES ASSOCIATED WITH SACROILIAC JOINT DYSFUNCTION • Muscle imbalances, • Posture, • Leg length discrepancies, • Incorrect walking gait, • Lumbar and hip injuries are all associated • Sudden violent contractions of the hamstrings or abdominal muscles with direct load to the buttocks • Forceful straightening from a crouched position. • Limited movement at the sacroiliac joint • Misalignment of the joint • Inflammation • Infection • Trauma to sacroiliac area • Degeneration of the sacroiliac joint area. SYMPTOMS OF SACRO ILIAC JOINT DYSFUNCTION • Lower back pain below the 5th lumbar vertebrae • Pain is commonly restricted to 1 side, however can be bilateral • Referred groin, buttocks and posterior lateral thigh pain • Genital and anal pain • Buttock pain • Difficulty walking up stairs • Problems rolling over in bed • Tenderness and discomfort in surrounding areas of the sacroiliac joint. There are specific tests that should be carried out in assessment to determine if an individual is suffering from sacroiliac dysfunction. Treatment of sacroiliac joint dysfunction involves various treatment techniques. • Core stability training • Re-alignment of sacroiliac joint if needed • Muscle energy techniques • Mobilisations of the lumbar spine • Intense stretch • Application of Kinesio tape • Massage can be applied to surrounding area’s to decrease tension in surrounding areas.
