SADDLE THEFT UPDATE - a few pointers to help others (repeat posting- please share). FEW THING TO BE AWARE OF A young man asked if he could take our manure and sell it. This happened a week before e break-in. As I always support those who try making an honest living, I said sure. We put our manure out on the pavement so anyone can take it. I did no see this as a risk, as he would not need access o my yard. We even gave him EPOL bags to pack it in. On Friday I noticed him, a block up, with a good view of our yard selling our manure …BUT he had no poster up stating price, or what he was selling. He was there for the entire week. When the Police came in, we mentioned this. This man has disappeared. Apparently he could have been sitting there (with our blessing) watching us. CONSIDERATION to try and stop saddle theft. Then the Police investigator said something of great value to me , and a consideration for those who sill have their tack. He asked why we do not engrave/stamp our cell numbers and names on the leather. He pointed to the back of the saddle seat. I think this is a very practical way of ((labelling)) your saddle. Even if you sell it later, if EVER it is on sold OR STOLEN, the new owner can make a call and verify that it’s not stolen. It must be done on an area that will be difficult to remove, under the butt at the back is ideal, if there is an insignia, do it next to the insignia. He said if we all do it in the same SPOT, then we will all know to look and check to see who the original owner was and call and clear the authenticity of the sale. We need to make saddles an UNATTRACTIVE and TRACEABLE commodity; it will then loose its value to the thief. .. Think about it. If we all do it , SADDLE THEFT may become undesirable career.. Any engraved tag can be removed, you must stamp the leather...if a good solid immovable stamp is placed on the saddle, the thieves will need to undergo saddle work to remove the owner’s details, this is not something they would readily do.
