SAFE HARBOR MEDICAL STREET OUTREACH FOR FRIDAY JANUARY 9, 2014! In the first few pictures you will see the team walking the railroad trestles in south side EASTON. We kept finding markings and garbage and tires so we kept walking. We finally noticed a steep embankment that we climbed up and then we came across nothing. So we kept walking, next we knew we found a walker and then we found some more markers so now we knew we were about to come across something big. We started to see sleeping bags frozen to the ground, there was more and more kids toys so we knew there would be children involved. We came across a chair that I used to have at Safe Harbor, so I knew it was going to be some of our people. Then we walked into the DO NOT ENTER sign at the front of the encampment and we knew the 55 minute walk was worth it. What the next 10 pictures will take you through is the true resourcefulness of the homeless. When you view the detail to how this encampment is put together it will amaze you. I have viewed over 100 camps and this was one of the most impressive I have come across in a long time. There was a separate tent for the sleeping quarters, there was a small medication area, there was a separate outhouse, there was a dining area tent, there was a supply tent, there was a kids tent. I left a business card because nobody was home but I was determined to find the people living in these quarters and I thought I would find them back at Safe Harbors Day Program and when we arrived back I did. Once I received the permission of the people living there it allowed us to go get pictures of the inside of the tents and the detail of the camp. I will share that post tomorrow on Safe Harbors Facebook page. The camp was designed last summer and the original owner is employed and living in Phillipsburg NJ. When he found a place he passed it on and the responsibility of the place to another homeless in need. This has been done 4 or 5 times now and in the very back tent is a couple that the original owner gave a space too, so he requires that they be allowed to stay as long as they want to. The great part is the last 4 residents that occupied the tent city have all located jobs through Safe Harbor and three of them came to live at the shelter. The pictures that I will post tomorrow are amazing as to the detail of the inside of these tents.
