SAFETY AT FASLANE NAVAL BASE NOT INSPIRING CONFIDENCE - TopicsExpress

SAFETY AT FASLANE NAVAL BASE NOT INSPIRING CONFIDENCE Responding to the publication of parliamentary answers on nuclear safety incidents at Faslane naval base on the Clyde, to SNP Defence spokesperson and Westminster leader Angus Robertson MP - which show that there is a worrying list if accidents and breaches of safety at the base as well as the Devonport base in England - Mr Robertson commented : Once again the question of safety at nuclear bases is under scrutiny . The answers I received from the Ministry of Defence make for frightening reading. They concern the most serious types of incident and would not even be in the public domain without asking for the information . It is frankly even more alarming that they refuse to disclose details about a safety related incident at Devonport . Safety has to be paramount at Faslane and Devonport and some of the reported incidents that we do know about to do not inspire confidence. This follows the chilling warnings about the instability of Trident nuclear missiles from American investigative journalist Eric Schlosser when he outlines the design flaws and safety problems about the warheads in the nuclear missiles systems and warns I hope in Scotland they are very careful when loading and unloading the missiles. Trident is an immoral system of mass destruction dumped on the Clyde half an hour from Scotlands biggest centre of population . It is vastly expensive and designed for the Cold War targets of the 1980s and there are now serious questions about the design and safety of the warheads . Scots are opposed to Trident. The churches, the trades unions, civic society and the majority of Scotlands elected representatives are all united in their opposition , yet the Westminster government wants to renew it -at even more vast expense. Only by voting Yes next year can we rid ourselves once and for all of Trident.
