SALAATUL-HAAJAH Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “And seek help in patience and prayer…” [al-Baqarah 2:45], and because of the hadeeth of Hudhayfah in which he said: “When anything distressed the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), he would pray.” (Reported by Abu Dawood in his Sunan, 1124, and classed as hasan in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 4703). Salaatul Haajah is not regarded as compulsory or something which should be adhered to as Sunnah, however it is good if one perform it it ones own capacity (nafil). There is reward for performing Salaah to Almighty Allah with the intention to seek the help of Almighty Allah in any matter which is not against the Shariah. There is no specific Surah to be recited or a certain amount of times that it is to be recited. One can recite any Surah. The reports of reciting it in a specific manner is from individual experience and not a rule laid down in Shariah. If this specific manner is regarded as a rule, then it will become a Bidah (innovation). Innovations are not accepted in Islam. There are many pious servants of Almighty Allah who performed hundreds of Rakaats of nafil Salaah during the night. This was their relationship with their Lord. It was performed in their individual capacity. It is not part of the Shariat (Law of Islam). It is nawaafil (optional) Salaah performed in their individual capacity which is not enforced upon anyone. Salaatul Haajah is termed as Nafil (optional) in the Shariah and is good to perform if one has any need.
