SALEM FIRE ADOPTS ITCLAMPTM HEMORRHAGE CONTROL SYSTEM News Release from Salem Fire Dept. The Salem Fire Department (SFD) recently added a new life-saving component to their emergency medical equipment inventory to better treat patients suffering from life-threatening, uncontrolled bleeding. The new trauma equipment, known as the iTClampTM Hemorrhage Control System, is now used by SFD paramedics to quickly control traumatic bleeding. Previously, acceptable treatments for uncontrolled bleeding included direct pressure, blood-clotting agents, and sometimes tourniquets. Many times these treatment options were either inappropriate or unsuccessful in controlling the bleeding. The iTClamp controls severe bleeding in seconds by sealing the edges of a wound to create a temporary pool of blood under pressure, which forms a stable clot that mitigates further blood loss until the wound can be surgically repaired. The medical director for the Salem Fire Department, Dr. Brian Clothier, stated This new technology is another step in our ongoing commitment to provide the best quality emergency services to our region. We are excited to be using this innovative device, Dr. Clothier added. The Salem Fire Department serves a population of 188,000 residents, responding to nearly 20,000 9-1-1 service calls a year and is the first pre-hospital emergency provider in the State of Oregon to adopt the iT Clamp. The SFD Paramedics recently used the iTClamp to close a large leg laceration just hours after placing the equipment on their response vehicles.
