SALLY I was too busy to record another song but a hole in the universe opened up one day (Dec 2014) and the germ of this song came to me. One night I was talking to my brother in law in his living room with the TV on in the background. In a tiny pause in our conversation I had the thought of writing a nice song that had a tasty piano riff and loose feel to it like Do You Know What I Mean by Lee Michaels. At that moment some guy on TV played a piano riff with that feel. I modified it in my head and headed out on the fifteen-minute drive home, constantly humming it to myself so I wouldnt forget it. I rushed into my apartment, recorded it rough, and developed the song over the following day. I later listened to Do You Know What I Mean and realized that the song I wrote is quite different in a lot of ways. An Englishman (Lee Michaels) with long, corkscrew, ginger hair, wearing dirty jeans, and pumping on a piano remains its inspiration, though. Maybe thats why a fake English accent crept into the end of the last bridge. This was another case of Write The Verse And The Chorus Will Come. The chorus came so effortlessly that I didnt think it could be any good and planned to write a better one later. It turned out to be perfect and had great kinship yet contrast with the verse. The outro has some sixteenth-note percussion in it and Im always amazed at how something so simple and primal can add such power and movement to a song.
