SALVATION BY PROXY Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” (Acts 19:13-15) Many people know the God of a pastor, mentor, counsellor or friend. They do not have a personal revelation of God because they have not personally encountered him. They therefore rely on a borrowed identity to deal with the issues of life. The exorcists including the seven sons of Sceva were only repeating what they had heard Paul do without an understanding or relationship. The evil spirit showed them that it understood authority by putting them in their place. This year, determine to know God for yourself. Make a commitment to build a deep personal relationship with Him. Let your testimony not be that you know someone who knows the Lord. Have your own story of your experience with Him.
