SAM McAUGHTRY. a brief, very personal, appreciation. Other will undoubtedly say all that needs saying about Sam. I knew and liked him very much, considered him one of the finest of his ilk, a master of the trade of writing. And perhaps the finest broadcaster I knew in the Province. I listened avidly to most everything I could catch of Sams considerable output...there are very few colleagues I rate or ever have rated, who could match his professionalism and ability to catch and hold onto the listener or reader. He was an integral part of this Ireland, north and south, throughout his working life ..I just cant separate Sam from the times that were in it, the times we were in it. He will be linked to one very special event...that Peace Train (now much forgotten but such a pivotal event when it happened) into which project he threw himself, with all the heart only Sam could muster. Sam said this: it is my dearest wish to see this island inhabited by five million Irish people, living in two jurisdictions with consent, but with institutions established to emphasise their Irishness. . Im sure he was happy to know that his dream was /is close to realisation.
