SAMI KHATIB After this day I am astonished that so few of my radical friends felt the need to defend the right to free speech and press -- to defend the medium in which we are existing too, intellectually and emotionally. Probably one does not appreciate so much what has always been granted to (most of) us since we are no threat to our ruling classes. This is a purely formal argument, I know, and at this stage I am not interested in what the content of this free speech may be (as we heard, hate-speech, racist, islamophob etc.). Of course, the sphere of human rights remains bourgeois ideology as long as we are still living in the age of capitalist exploitation and imperialism. But in reverse, we cannot give up on these purely formal rights even though (or precisely why) we are still living in capitalism.
