SAMINA IN KARACHI Samina Baig, proud daughter of Gilgit Baltistan speaking at Karachi, Pakistans Aga Khan Hospitals gymnasium, titled No Mountain Too High, Nor Too Easy. For those who dont know her, she is the youngest and only Muslim woman to have climbed all seven highest peaks of all seven continents. I am quoting two separate lines from this article, which succinctly summarize two interesting and crucial aspects of Gilgit Baltistan society. A woman can do just about anything a man can, all she requires is ‘opportunity’ This quote by Samina amply displays the amazing forwardness of the people of the region of Gilgit Baltistan, where education and specially education of girls is considered most important. Girls are encouraged to pursue careers which might be other wise discouraged in most parts of South Asia. “The place where I am from, it has no electricity, no telephones and no internet.” This second quote by Samina is really heart breaking as it shows how backward and unconnected our region remains even in this modern age.
