SAMMY - Lovely dog in Queanbeyan pound needing help No. 734 ‘Sammy’ female staffy x approx. 1-2 years old – due 24 September.Sammy was surrendered for escaping Queanbeyan Pound, NSW is about 10 mins from Canberra airport and about 20-25 mins from Canberra City Centre. **PLEASE do not phone or email Mina asking BDR to help this dog** For more information please call the Queanbeyan Pound on 02 6285 6269 Pound volunteers observations:- In the outside yard – very friendly greeting, jumped up a few times then settled Stand and Ignore – was calm, stood close to handler Withdrawal of affection – jumped up a few times Handling – stood quietly then jumped up Health – in season, blood in her pen but could be a few days old as she wasn’t bleeding in the outside yard Guide and place – very easy to guide into a sit but resisted the drop Stranger –friendly, not fazed Dog to dog – Sammy has been jumping into other yards so has spent time with a few of the dogs without any problems. When introduced to a male Pomeranian she was friendly and appropriate and keen to play Food bowl guarding – worried about hand coming in but did start to eat and allowed head to be moved away then she went back and continued eating Correction on lead – responsive, followed handler Training – knows sit Responsive – yes especially to treats and encouraging voice Motivated by – treats and voice Signs of fence jumping/climbing – she can easily jump up and over the pound fences. They are around 6’ high. Comments – Oh Sammy! She is a really lovely dog with a great nature but she can easily jump a 6’ fence. She was out in the outside yards when we arrived and was quite happy to stay there as ranger was cleaning out pens. Once we all moved out of sight she climbed out of her yard looking for us. She’ll need at least 7’ colour bond or wooden fencing with the rail on other side to keep her safe. Such a shame because she’s a sweet dog who absolutely loves being around people. She’s good with other dogs although can be a little boisterous so best with a dog of her own size. Sammy does jump up when she’s excited so will need to learn not to do that. She’s a compact medium size dog and pretty easy to manage. She’s also responsive and will focus on her handler so would be good to train. When we finished the test she stood quietly with us while we wrote the notes and chatted. Sammy became anxious when we put her back into her pen. She barked, cried and knocked her bowls around. This beautiful girl will need an owner not only with a very secure yard but one who will work on her separation anxiety and have another dog for company. (Maryanne)
