SANCTUARY Back in 2008, I needed to escape. We had just relocated our gym, which took a lot out of me. Not just the move, but we left a facility we had occupied for 15 years. And it was then that we got a really good picture of just how high a mountain we would have to climb to keep from going under. My good friend Louie Liguori, had been inviting me to coach at his camp in Myrtle Beach. I told him I might not feel like coaching, but I would love you live on his boat for a week. With no strings attached, Louie said cmon down and well play by ear. From the moment I walked in his gym, I could feel love and feel for his kids and staff, and from then on it became a necessary two weeks on my calendar every year since. 7 weeks ago I wondered if I would be healthy enough to make the trip, much less be an effective coach. This morning I will hop in my truck and make the 8 hour drive to the beach; healthier than I have ever been (other that lifting anything too heavy), and Ive never been so anxious to get there, ready to coach a lot and sing a little. When I get back, I will start an adventure I hadnt counted on a year ago, and I will begin chemo. I would be lying if I said I wasnt nervous, I dont know how it will affect me, my energy, and my ability to effectively coach, but for the next two weeks I will be soaked by South Carolina sun and having a blast with the kids and coaches I have come to love as second family. BEACH BREAK HERE I COME!
