SANITATION DEPARTMENT UPDATE - LEAF COLLECTION The Owensboro Sanitation Department wants to remind customers of the importance of raking leaves early in the season in order to avoid bad weather and to gain quicker service. Customers who wait to rake their leaves will suffer longer wait times for leaf collection due to the total number of leaves on the street. Delays also occur if we have freezing rain or snow that limits the ability of our equipment to lift leaves from the ground. There are several ways to dispose of leaves if you are a customer of the Owensboro Sanitation Department: - Rake leaves curbside, but not into the street for vacuum collection. - For faster service, place leaves in bags or cans and place curbside on trash day for collection. - For the fastest service, carry your leaves to the orange leaf collection dumpsters, located behind the Sportscenter on Hickman Ave. To ensure quality vacuum service: - Rake curbside but not into the street. - Do not park vehicles within 10 feet of leaf piles. This room is necessary to allow our equipment to reach the pile and to keep your vehicle from leaf dust. - Do not mix brush with leaves as it may damage our equipment: Brush and limb collection is suspended during leaf season. - Do not place leaf piles over water meter lids – lids may be drawn up and damage our equipment. - Do not wet leaves – vacuums cannot lift frozen leaf piles. - Keep leaves out of gutters and streets to avoid ticketing. - Do not place leaves in mobile trash carts; trash and leaves must not be mixed. - Be ready; crews may not return for late rake outs or inaccessible piles. - Rake early in the season; Snow and ice may slow or prohibit leaf collection. - Crews began collections this year in Zone 1 and are progressing throughout the city. To keep up with progress of leaf crews, read the Messenger-Inquirer, listen to WBKR and WBIO, check the city website at owensboro.org, subscribe to text alerts through the city website or watch for announcements on cable channel 75. As always, there are no additional charges for leaf collection. The same low rate of $12.00 per month allows you to make unlimited disposals up until February.
