SANITATION INNOVATION DESIGN CONTEST Financial INclusion Improves Sanitation and Health Seeking innovative sanitation system designs for business creation A total reward amount of INR 7,00,000/ € 10,000 is being offered by WASTE organisation FINISH stands for Financial INclusion Improves Sanitation and Health and is being supported and implemented since 2009 by an Indo-Dutch consortium comprising NGOs, academic institutions and financial institutions, insurance companies and banks from the two countries. Its aims to provide access to safe sanitation facilities for minimum 2 million users (i.e. toilets with proper treatment of waste produced) especially to low income communities in rural India through mobilizing funds from end-user households. The contest is based on the premise that among other factors, the lack of sanitation coverage in rural India (and elsewhere), is due to lack of innovation on possible ‘designs’ to fit diverse environmental and socio–economic conditions, water needs and local availability of materials. Therefore, in order to promote innovation generation in this much neglected field, we are organizing an innovation contest, where the innovation can take the form of a novel design for: • urinals • individual toilets • community toilets • multi-purpose toilets The objective of the contest is to create useful knowledge that will promote entrepreneurship and small business creation in sanitation activities. Therefore, we are seeking designs that are cost effective and environmentally safe and backed up by a simple business plan for business creation. In short, we want novel designs for sanitation units backed up with cost estimations, demand assumptions so that a strong business case can be made to potential entrepreneurs (including NGOs and Microfinance institutions) to take up the construction of toilets as a social business. As in the first contest, this time also the challenge is being open to candidates all over the world, because the lack of good toilet facilities is a problem in many developing countries. Entries is open to students/professionals(NGOs&MFIs) who will be judged by an international, interdisciplinary team separately. Last date for registration is October 15, 2013. Registration is open. Deadline for submissions: November 1, 2013 Announcement of results: Nov 19, 2013 – on World Toilet Day!
