SASCO Statement on the Resignation of the Racist Coward – Theuns Eloff – at North West University 08 March 2014 The South African Students Congress (SASCO) notes and welcomes the departure of the racist coward Theuns Eloff who was a Vice-Chancellor at the North West University. We believe that this is a sheer act of cowardice which is only done to hide the fact that he has been presiding over this untransformed institution, more particularly the Potchefstroom campus where the backward Nazi Salute incidence happened. SASCO had long condemned the incidence of a Nazi salute in the North West University’s Potchefstroom Campus in a predominantly white female residence. This is the same university in 2012 where racist white students were caring NAZI flags in a residence initiation ceremony. We condemn such backward practices that reverse the gains of our democracy. Theuns Eloff is guilty of this incidence as he has failed to transform the institutional culture in the campus in the 10 years that he has been at the helm. Now to run away from the report that will come out of this incidence, he has decided to resign like a coward that he is. We in the student movement, have always said that the North West University’s Potchefstroom campus is a serious fertile ground for such backward elements as it remains untransformed and is rotten to the core all under the leadership of the most reactionary university head in the last 10 years – Theuns Eloff. We wish to remind the nation that this is the same racist that defended the fact that the Potchefstroom campus is having less than 15 percent black representation 20 years into our democracy. He even theorised that the institution is transformed in quality rather numbers and now the incidence has actually exposed the fact that his lame argument was only meant to cover the untransformed nature of the institution. We do not wish Eloff luck in any place that he is going and we plead with the entire post-school sector not to employ this coward. We will ensure that we do whatever is in our power to ensure that beyond this he and his problematic views do not find space within the tertiary landscape. We believe that this resignation alone is not enough, the entire council and management of the institution needs to be bought to book to account on how they allowed an apartheid style institution of higher learning in a democratic South Africa. We call on the minister to act on this matter with the necessary speed that it deserves.
