SATURDAY AUG 17 AOK RIDE --- report from Kevin Thompson It was overcast and a light drizzle when 17 hardy AOKers met at the Gardens for the afternoon ride. The handful of Tuff Nuts elected to ride the Leith Valley/Waitati Valley circuit to Waitati and back while the Super Mediums decided to head down to Port Chalmers and back. It was good to see previously ‘full metal’ Julie back out riding again after her surgery and return to her previous self as ‘no metal’ Julie (at the after match function at Filadelfios, Julie showed us a bag of metal parts that had been removed from her lower leg following her breaking her ‘tibia and fibula’ --- was a very impressive collection of metal!!). We rode up Opoho Road which is always good to get the heart rate up and then headed on down through the Northern Cemetery, out onto Butts Road and on past the Yacht Club and the cycleway to St Leonards. We pedalled into a stiff head wind and thicker drizzle but it wasn’t too cold. We rode on down the old road to Port Chalmers and at the bottom of the Roseneath Hill, Lois cleaned out a duck that had been asleep on the road and suddenly woke up and took off in front of her. Luckily there was no damage to the duck or Lois. We were soon at Sawyers Bay and then over the hill to Port Chalmers and from there, it was a quick blat round to Back Beach and on past the resident geese. From here, we enjoyed a nice tail wind back on the road, the cycleway, and the road again, through the university, and back to the Gardens and into Filadelfios. It had been another very enjoyable AOK ride.
