SATURDAY SENTIMENTS By Mercy Karumba DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU. THE GOLDEN RULE We come from different tribes, races, religions etc. However, most of us will most probably agree on one thing and that is: DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO TO YOU. Earlier this year I attended an inter-denominational conference in Westlands. This was a great eye-opener. Let me share a bit of it with you that is in line with some religions in the world. CHRISTIAN FAITH: So in everything do unto others as you would have them do to you, for this sums up the laws and the prophets. (Matt 7:12) ISLAM FAITH: No one of you is a believer until he desires for his brother what he desires for himself. BAHA’I FAITH: Blessed is he who prefers his brother before himself. HINDU FAITH: This is the sum of duty: do naught to others that which if done to thee would cause pain. JUDAISM: What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow man. That is the entire law, the rest is commentary. ZOROASTRIANISM: That nature only is good when it shall not do unto another whatever is not good for its own self. BUDDHISM: Hurt not others with that which pains yourself. Well it saddens when we rise up against each other physically, emotionally, spiritually or even mentally. It is such a pity when we see others not deserving as ourselves. I wish we would be keen to ask, “is this what I would like done to me, or my family or to someone who means the world to me?” The moment you cut off someone’s dreams, break a relationship, steal, corruptly gain what someone else otherwise deserves, go speaking ill about another person, the list is endless then, do you forget that maybe what is ahead of you could come haunting? In other words, “What goes around comes around”. The theory of Karma works most times if not all, as much as we may try to deny it, we will always enjoy fruits of greatness by our acts of goodness and the opposite remains true, in the same measure. “If a man digs a pit, he will fall into it, if a man rolls a stone, it will roll back on him.” So what measure would you want back? Regardless of the beliefs we hold on to, however different, I am sure we all agree that doing harm, however ‘not so serious’ is ever a virtue. Whatever is not good to you, is definitely not better done to another person. Yes that is the bitter truth. Think before plotting anything or being corrupt in whatever form. Corruption is not what only those in high positions do as we are made to believe, it is simply having your way using depraved/ not so genuine means which in most cases, is of negative impact to a third party. Let us take a challenge to search ourselves and aim at doing that which is edifying to those around us as much as they may not be deserving and the same grace will be stretched out to us in a different form. Wishing you all, a good evening. From Mercy Karumba
