SAVE PERALTA NEWS SAVEPERALTA.ORG August 11th, 2014 Hello neighbors! We hope you are having a great summer. It’s been a while since we’ve sent an update, but there is encouraging news on several fronts. Peralta Site Lease Extension OUSD Board Meeting this Thursday, 8/14, 7:00 p.m. The agenda for this Thursday’s OUSD Board meeting has been published, and includes an action item to discuss a proposal from Super Sports to extend their lease of the site. As you may recall, the current lease is set to expire March 31st, 2015. The proposal recommends extending the lease through October 2016. This item first surfaced at a June Board meeting, but was tabled, as the management at Super Sports requested to extend the lease to two years (versus a single year). They also wanted to include a provision that prevents the Board from actively marketing the property for sale during the period of the extended lease. If you are interested in how the Board will vote on the lease extension, come to the meeting this Thursday, 8/14, 7:00 p.m. (1401 N. Handy St., Orange, CA, Bldg H). Here’s a link to the agenda: orangeusd.k12.ca.us/board/pdf/2014/agenda0814-1.pdf Fall Election: OUSD Board We have all come to understand, during the fight to protect our neighborhoods, how vital it is to have responsible, ethical, community-minded elected officials. We need these individuals to demonstrate integrity in the way that they lead; listening to, and relying heavily on, the voice of the constituents they serve. Fortunately there are some very qualified, community-minded candidates that have filed for this fall’s OUSD elections. For more info, check out the latest from the Greater Orange News Service at this link: greaterorange.blogspot/. Diane Singer and Kathy Moffat have both been extremely supportive of Save Peralta, continuing to actively engage with neighbors, and having voiced their concern on the “Fairfield Plan” from the onset. Diane Singer is running unopposed in Trustee Area 1, and we are delighted that she will be back on the Board this fall. Kathy Moffat is being challenged by three other candidates in Trustee Area 4, but her experience, leadership, and community-minded focus has gained the trust and respect of our neighbors. Other open seats on the OUSD Board are those of Tim Surridge and Rick Ledesma, neither of whom have been supportive of Save Peralta. Both men have supported (and led the charge!) on the now defeated “Fairfield Plan”, that would have resulted in 400 high density apartments being constructed right in our back yard. Here is a summary of two candidates opposing Tim and Rick; Florice Hoffman, Attorney at Law (Area 5, running against Tim Surridge), and Dr. Tim Perez (Area 7, running against Rick Ledesma): Office Incumbent New Candidate OUSD Board Trustee Area 5 Tim Surridge Received large campaign contribution funds and official endorsement from property Developers. Once elected, spearheaded the “Fairfield Proposal”, aimed at constructing 400 high density apartments in our community. Did not engage the community in these plans, and did not listen to community as we fought to defeat this proposal. Explored eliminating two trustee seats during his Board Presidency to increase the likelihood of pushing forth his own developer-driven agenda. Has been characterized as condescending to the women trustees, community members, and numerous community leaders Florice Hoffman Attorney at Law, Rutgers University School of Law. Has two children that both went through the OUSD system. Florice has been very actively involved as her children have progressed through OUSD, to improve the quality of education for children of the district, while partnering with the local community. OUSD Board Trustee Area 7 Rick Ledesma Received large campaign contribution funds and official endorsement from property Developers. Fully supported the “Fairfield Proposal”, aimed at constructing 400 high density apartments in our community. Was condescending towards concerned neighbors who opposed the plan. Recently has expressed concern at having to adopt more formalized policies on ethics that have been proposed by concerned Board members. Dr. Tim Perez Assistant Professor of Information Management Systems at Brandam University- part of the Chapman University System. A highly regarded, renown IT specialist and educator, Perez holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems from Chapman University; a Master of Science Degree in Information Systems from National University; and a Doctor of Science Degree in Information Systems with a specialization in Information Assurance and Computer Security from Dakota State University
