Documentary Director: Octavio Guerra Spanish w/subtitles Residents of a small Costa Rican village forecast a drought for the upcoming summer, and a proposal to build an aqueduct is met with skepticism. A local school teacher writes and stages a play to raise awareness about the issue and convince the townsfolk about the benefits of the project. -- Wednesday, April 9, 2014 Where the Sun is Born/Donde nace el sol Guatemala, 2013, 85 min. Fiction Director: Elías Jiménez Spanish and Mayan w/subtitles Maya, an indigenous woman, dreams of the invasion of her peoples. With the spiritual help of her ancestors, she survives in the jungle and learns to respect it. His talk will focus on the way in which the art of protest and the role of youth and women led to important social transformations in Oaxaca’s social movement. Iván Arenas is a Mexican-American anthropologist, architect, artist, activist, and most importantly a parent. He is a visiting scholar with the Social Justice Initiative (SJI) at UIC and currently showcasing his “Chicagoaxaca” exhibit at SJI’s Pop Up Just Art Space and at Centro Autónomo.
