SAVED FROM EVICTION : I refer to comments made by the mayor Col - TopicsExpress

SAVED FROM EVICTION : I refer to comments made by the mayor Col Mitchell (Advertiser page 1 June 5) regarding Council’s legal battle to evict Richard Garton (67) from his Cawdor farmhouse where he has lived with the consent of the owners for the last 20 years. Mayor Col Mitchell wants ratepayers to believe that he and the General Manager Les McMahon made the “right decision” to take legal action against the elderly recluse. But if they had made the “right decision”, why are ratepayers left with an obscene debt amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars in court costs? The mayor and general manager can make all the excuses they like to justify their actions but they have to admit that they made the wrong decision in using its might to force Mr Garton to abandon his lodgings however humble. Council has been ordered to pay costs and to do that, Council will have to increase rates or borrow to make up the short fall in the adopted budget. Whichever way it goes, the ratepayer loses. Isn’t it time Council was made accountable for making the wrong decisions?
