SAVING 18th CENTURY CANNON AT CAPUCHIN. This cast iron cannon - TopicsExpress

SAVING 18th CENTURY CANNON AT CAPUCHIN. This cast iron cannon dates from the 1760s and was one of 10 signal cannons that lined the west coast of Dominica. It was fired to alert the coastal signal stations of the flag messages that were passed from one signal station to the other from Capuchin in the north to Scotts Head (Cashacrou) in the south. This one had been abandoned in the grass at Capuchin and was stolen one day (or in another version it was borrowed) to decorate a bar in another part of Dominica. After the village council alerted the police and put pressure on the cannon lifter, he dumped it back in the village. This week, with funds from the Fort Shirley Restoration Project we raised the cannon again and placed it on a permanent gun carriage at the entrance to Capuchin Village to secure it for the community and the nation. The replica gun carriage was skillfuly built out of steel and cast concrete by master ironworker Serge Japan Savarin.
