Promise number 1 - Increased yields: FACT: GMO seeds have not been shown to definitively increase yield potentials, and in fact, the yields of herbicide-tolerant or insect-resistant seeds may be occasionally lower than the yields of conventional varieties Promise number 2 - No need for concern of superbugs/weeds for 40 years in to use: FACT: Since 1996 more than two dozen weed species have become resistant to Roundups chief ingredient glyphosate, causing farmers to use increasing amounts both of glyphosate and other weedkilling chemicals to try to control the superweeds (yummy) Resistant weeds have become a major problem for many farmers reliant on GE crops, and are now driving up the volume of herbicide needed each year by about 25 percent The relatively recent emergence and spread of insect populations resistant to the Bt toxins expressed in Bt corn and cotton has started to increase insecticide use, and will continue to do so Things are getting worse, fast, In order to deal with rapidly spreading resistant weeds, farmers are being forced to expand use of older, higher-risk herbicides. To stop corn and cotton insects from developing resistance to Bt, farmers planting Bt crops are being asked to spray the insecticides that Bt corn and cotton were designed to displace. Promise number 3 - Less pesticide and herbicide use: FACT: See above. Promise number 4 - More nutritional FACT: There are no commercially available GM foods with improved nutritional value. Currently available GM foods are no better and in some cases are less nutritious than natural foods. Some have been proven in tests to be toxic or allergenic. Examples include: • GM soya had 12–14% lower amounts of cancer-fighting isoflavones than non-GM soya. • Oilseed rape engineered to have vitamin A in its oil had much reduced vitamin E and altered oil-fat composition. • Human volunteers fed a single GM soya bean meal showed that GM DNA can survive processing and is detectable in the digestive tract (they promised it wouldnt be by the way so you can make that broken promise number 5). There was evidence of horizontal gene transfer to gut bacteria. Horizontal gene transfer of antibiotic resistance and Bt insecticide genes from GM foods into gut bacteria is an extremely serious issue. This is because the modified gut bacteria could become resistant to antibiotics or become factories for Bt insecticide. While Bt in its natural form has been safely used for years as an insecticide in farming, Bt toxin genetically engineered into plant crops has been found to have potential ill health effects on laboratory animals • In the late 1980s, a food supplement produced using GM bacteria was toxic, initially killing 37 Americans and making more than 5,000 others seriously ill. • Several experimental GM food products (not commercialized were found to be harmful: • People allergic to Brazil nuts had allergic reactions to soya beans modified with a Brazil nut gene. • The GM process itself can cause harmful effects. GM potatoes caused toxic reactions in multiple organ systems. GM peas caused a 2-fold allergic reaction – the GM protein was allergenic and stimulated an allergic reaction to other food components. This raises the question of whether GM foods cause an increase in allergies to other substances. I can go on and on here. Theyre full of shit, always have been, always will be. They have no desire to feed the poor or to provide nutritional food, they have no desire to increase yields, their only desire is to sling chemicals, thats their business model, and the more the better (duh). The only question is how long do we allow it to be at the expense of our health and well being this time around, we have been here before with this disgusting corporation, a few times. Broken promise after broken promise after broken promise and yet people will still not find anything wrong. THATS the problem. Speaking of allergies, it might be interesting to note that GMOs were introduced into the food supply in 1996. Between 1997 and 2002 the number of hospitalizations related to allergic reactions to food increased by 265 percent. 265 percent. 1 in 13 children now has a food allergy. And since I brought up disease, all disease is up, and keeps rising, and the common denominator that I see is our food. I can go on and on showing correlations of disease increase to glyphosphate use and GMO crop increase including thyroid cancer, liver cancer, obesity, high blood pressure, acute kidney injury, incidence and prevalence of diabetes and end stage renal disease, to name a few, I can even provide link after link after link and yet still many will see nothing wrong. So no increased yields as promised, no better nutritional value as promised, no less pesticide use as promised, on the contrary its WAY more (cha ching), superbugs and/or superweeds already instead of 40 years in as promised and yet we are supposed to buy in to the promise that its 100% safe. Bullshit.
