SAYING GOODBYES............ Sweet SAMSON came to us on a hot day, around July of 2012.....He wandered up to one of our volunteers home.....Being the suspicious one in our group, I always thought he was dumped there on purpose, but who knows..... An already Senior, Giant of a guy (Bull Mastiff) with severe eye issues....Ulcerated cornea on one, blind in the other & a severe ulceration in his mouth....He drooled blood!! We had him a couple of months (Thank you Kim & Nancy) as we had contacted a Bull Mastiff group, hoping to find placement.....A group out of New Jersey responded that they had an opening, so arrangements for transport began....I remember packing his bag....He had a little of everything from snacks, string cheese, bottled water, his medications & an extra tube of his eye drops....I remember my son saying, I was over-reacting, as he always does, when I get carried away!!! :) SAMSON left on transport Sept. 18, 2012..... He was in a foster home (The lady that is president of the organization) for awhile....They adored him!!! His one eye was removed while in their care....It was severe glaucoma & he was in excruciating pain!!! Yes, blind in the other..... It wasnt long before a family fell in LOVE and made him their own...He was Adopted! Sadly, we received this message a few days ago from his original foster momma: I just got off the phone with Sam’s mom, Lara. He passed away gently in his sleep about half an hour ago. My guess it is was a ruptured heart or splenic tumor. He wasn’t in any distress, and because it happened when he was sleeping, he most likely had no awareness of it at all. He was snuggled up under his blanket after dinner, resting, and Lara noticed that he wasn’t breathing. Just a few days ago we were laughing about his habit of rolling on his back in the driveway, and how he would sometimes slid down toward the bottom if it was icy - not that it stopped him from doing it. He was a happy, confident dog, even though he couldn’t see. He couldn’t have had a better life - I only wish he had had more time to enjoy it. Last week, they lost one of their Bullie girls to osteosarcoma. Thankfully, they adopted another senior from us back in the fall, so they have her to keep their Boxer girl company. Here are some recent pictures of Sam, including him modeling the antlers that I sent him in his Christmas package. Thank you so much for saving him and caring for him and helping him get all the way from Oklahoma to New Jersey, so we could find him a home. So, we say goodbye to Our SWEET, SWEET SAMSON.....May he enjoy running & playing at the Bridge with his eyes wide open!!!! He was such a joy to know & we are so grateful that we got to share a small piece of his adventure....RIP Big Guy....We LOVE YOU!!!!
