SC Horse Owners, 5 additional cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and 1 case of West Nile Virus (WNV) were confirmed this week by the SC State Veterinarian’s office. This brings the 2013 current EEE case total to 30 confirmed and 2 suspect. This report of WNV is South Carolina’s first for 2013. 5 New Confirmed Encephalitis Positives for the week of August 12-16, 2013 EEE 2 Berkeley County EEE 1 Dorchester County EEE 1 Florence County WNV 1 Lancaster County EEE 1 Lee County 30 EEE Total Confirmed Positives 2013 1 Barnwell County 3 Berkeley County 4 Charleston County 1 Clarendon County 1 Colleton County 1 Dorchester County 1 Florence County 10 Horry County 2 Lee County 2 Marion County 3 Sumter County (2 additional suspect/unconfirmed) 1 Williamsburg County 1 WNV Total Confirmed Positives 2013 1 Lancaster County Please continue to educate horse owners and promote the preventative care for these diseases. Mosquito control and vaccination are very effective management tools. Please use this information to encourage owners, staff, and producers to properly report, prevent, and manage our SC animals. Each of these diseases has a human health significance and cases can be prevented and risk reduced through effective vaccination and management strategies. Neurologic diseases in horses include but not limited to- Rabies, EEE, WNV, and EHV-1. Please review the attached “Reportable Diseases in South Carolina” list by both diagnosis, suspicion, and clinical signs. The diseases and clinical signs listed on the attachment are by law reportable the State Veterinarian’s office within 48 hours.
