SC Horse Owners, 5 additional cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and 1 case of West Nile Virus (WNV) were confirmed this week by the SC State Veterinarian’s office. This brings the 2013 current EEE case total to 30 confirmed and 2 suspect. Mosquito control and vaccination are very effective management tools. Please use this information to encourage owners, staff, and producers to properly report, prevent, and manage our SC animals. Each of these diseases has a human health significance and cases can be prevented and risk reduced through effective vaccination and management strategies. Neurologic diseases in horses include but not limited to- Rabies, EEE, WNV, and EHV-1. Please review the attached “Reportable Diseases in South Carolina” list by both diagnosis, suspicion, and clinical signs. The diseases and clinical signs listed on the attachment are by law reportable the State Veterinarian’s office within 48 hours.
