SC proposal: Sunil Gavaskar as BCCI chief; no RR, CSK in IPL 7 Cricketnext Staff | 27-Mar-2014 15:58 PM In a sensational twist to the IPL spot-fixing scandal, the Supreme Court on Thursday proposed to the Board of Control for Cricket in India that Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals should not be allowed to participate in the seventh season of Indian Premier League. The apex court also suggested that legendary Indian batsmen Sunil Gavaskar should be named BCCI president as current chief N Srinivasan has said that pending inquiry he shall step aside. In the place of Srinivasan, we propose to appoint an experienced cricket player like Sunil Gavaskar to replace him and function as BCCI president, justice A.K. Patnaik said at a hearing in New Delhi. The Supreme Court, which on Tuesday wanted Srinivasan to step down as president to ensure a fair probe into the IPL betting and match-fixing scandal, will now pass an interim an order on Friday. The top court made no decision on Srinivasan today, whose son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan of Chennai Super Kings has been indicted for betting and sharing team information. The court also proposed that employees of India Cements, of which Srinivasan is managing director, and which owns CSK, not be part of the BCCI set-up. Also, Harish Salve, one of the senior lawyers arguing the Justice Mudgal Committee report case before the Supreme Court claimed that India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is guilty of corrupt conduct because he gave false statements to the Mudgal Committee about Gurunath Meiyappans role with the Chennai Super Kings. Earlier, BCCI in its proposal to Supreme Court assured it of initiating disciplinary proceedings on the basis of recommendations of Mudgal committee report. BCCI told the apex court that investigation be carried out on the basis of findings of Mudgal committee report. The court said it will have to think hard for the benefit of cricket and will have to pass order. Under the Franchise Agreement and IPLs anti-corruption code, CSK runs the risk of facing disciplinary action including ban for the acts of Meiyappan, who was its Team Principal, for bringing the game into disrepute. The committee is of the view that the material on record clearly indicates that Meiyappan was the face of CSK and the team official of CSK, the report had said rejecting Srinivasans contention that he was merely a cricket enthusiast. Rajasthan co-owner Raj Kundra is also under the betting and match-fixing scanner. Earlier on Thursday, the BCCI offered a compromise solution. The Boards lawyers said Srinivasan would step aside to ensure a fair probe. Offering a time-bound inquiry to be conducted by the Chennai police, the Board requested the court not to curtail Srinivasans hefty role in international cricket. The SC will listen to BCCIs reply at 1030 hrs IST on March 27 and then pass the orders. The other arguments in the case will be heard on 16 April.
