SCAM ALERT! We’re receiving reports from citizens saying they are getting phone calls from people claiming to be from the IRS who demand money for supposed back taxes that are owed. In several instances, the scammer threatens the person with immediate arrest, to have their utilities shut off, their drivers licenses revoked, or some other penalty; unless money is immediately received. Many times, the targets of the scams are instructed to pay their “debts” with prepaid debit cards commonly known as “Green Dot Money Pak” cards. Complicating the ruse is the fact that the criminals use equipment to spoof caller ID’s that make it appear they are actually calling from the IRS.
