SCARCROFT ROAD ESTATES. Someone asked me a couple of days ago about Scott Street, off Scarcroft Road and if I knew who the Mr. Scott was who built it. Well, then I started to research the area and some interesting info and images have come up. Here is the first. This is of a newly built St. Clements Church set between the newly created roads of Scarcroft Road and Nunthorpe Road before any of the houses on those streets, at the Bishopthorpe Road end, have been built ! The area looks like a moonscape - yet only a couple of years before this was a rural scene of fields of barley before housing crept further and further out of the walled city ! You will see (or rather you wont) in this picture that Scarcroft School has not yet been built and, in the far distance, just the rear of large houses off Blossom Street and the Mount. The date of this picture is 1872. More will follow. Picture is from the Imagine York/CYC collection.
