SCHOOL DAYS We were in Class 8, one day Mr Amin Khokhar, our physics teacher was explaining us things about Air pressure and barometers. He also explained in detail how aeroplanes fly and how parachutes help in reducing the speed of an object falling from the sky. One of my room mates and class mate who happened to belong to Swat and was normally in a semi awake state (Eyes open, brain asleep), during such lectures, all of a sudden, at the mention of how a parachute works, became alert and started taking notes. That day during the night prep (Compulsory study) time, he asked me as to where could one jump from an aeroplane with a parachute. I told him that it was probably, only available in the Pakistan Airforce Training Academy. He then discussed it with 2 close friends. We never knew what was on his mind, but he changed overnight into a man with a purpose. He discused the technical details of his project with our School bus driver, the tailor and the canteen contractor. It happened at 1500 hrs on a Sunday (when most of the students were either asleep or had gone to visit Abbottabad city). He came to our room, which was on the first floor and invited us to witness history in the making. We eagerly went out on the verandah - we immediately understood his intentions and tried to change his mind - but he was too far gone to heed to our advice. He donned his tailor made parachute, ( the tailor had stitched two bedsheets together and then stitched on the strings - actually sooter ki rassi which was provided free of cost by the canteen contractor), the harness was made of an old seat belt - thanks to the school bus driver. He stood on the railing and with a big grin and a wave - jumped into space !!!! Epilog : The parachute strings got entangled in the railing and, he only broke his shin bone and two ribs. And of course he made history - the only student to be thrown out of school For jumping from the first floor with a home made parachute
