SCI-FIT PLEASANTON September Client Spotlight - Karen Reyes Karen was injured in 2012 as a front seat passenger in a car accident in Mexico City where she was working as an Ear, Nose and Throat surgeon. She broke her thoracic vertebrae and was assessed as ASIA A Complete T-10 SCI. Just 3 days after she was discharged from acute care, she moved to the Bay Area to live with her aunt and receive the best SCI care she could find. When Karen started working out at SCI-FIT, her goals were to improve her lockouts and take steps without assistance. Karen has made tremendous strength gains throughout her entire body. About a year ago, she started contracting her quadricep muscle strong enough to wiggle her knee cap, which has since transferred over into standing unassisted at the parallel bars and taking unassisted steps in the platform walker. Karen enjoys both the gait training/walking aspect at SCI-FIT, as well as the functional fitness component. She has been a loyal client for over two years, and doesn’t plan on stopping. Karen has since be re-assessed as ASIA B Incomplete L-1, living proof that “complete paralysis” can be overcome. “SCI-FIT to me is a friendly facility of possibilities, encouragement and hard work. When I’m there I don’t feel like I’m in a wheelchair, I just feel like it’s my regular workout. It’s not about your disability, it’s about your strength, your growth and your goals. Exercise is fundamental to keep you healthy.” Karen just started classes to earn a Master in Public Health at UC Berkeley. She plans to work on advocacy and health policy for individuals living with spinal cord injuries and paralysis. Best of luck in all your endeavors!
