SCMP Letters to the Editor Today (23/09/14) - Government must promote green living In response to Natasha Lais letter (Act to curb needless light pollution, September 21), it is necessary for the government to take action to tackle the serious problem of pollution in Hong Kong, especially light and water pollution. Many signs shine at midnight, long after the companies have closed. Is it necessary to leave them on at night when the whole city is sleeping? As Ms Lai mentioned in her letter, these signs not only annoy nearby residents, but also disrupt their biological clocks. In addition, they are wasting electricity. Moreover, some residents leave lights switched on when they dont need to. They turn on all their lights when they arrive home, but seldom switch off the lights when they go to bed. Water pollution is also a problem. Many Hong Kong residents are in the habit of throwing rubbish such as tissues, water bottles and plastics bags into the sea. This rubbish contaminates the water and damages the ecosystem, resulting in the deaths of fish and other marine life. Furthermore, some residents frequently flush unsuitable items down lavatories in homes, offices and public places. These toxic, unwieldy or non-biodegradable items may obstruct water pipes or contaminate water supply, making the process of sewage processing and water purification more complicated. The government needs to take a proactive stance and promote green living by offering guidance on conserving water and electricity to reduce pollution, and with regard to responsible waste management.
