SCOTTISH UNIVERSITIES CONFERENCE CUP FINAL MATCH REPORT DUNDEE MENS 1ST TEAM VS. ABERDEEN MENS 1ST TEAM As Wednesdays cup victory, and indeed the whole season, was such a great team effort, we have decided to each give our own unique account of proceedings. So as not to overwhelm avid followers of our exploits, I will serialise the reports. First up is Romanian sports personality of the year, Mihai Podaru: I knew that a trip to Dundee would be comparable to one of the matches in the African Qualifiers for World Cup when, for example, Cote D’Ivoire plays a decisive away match in Swaziland. The only exceptions were that the Savannah-type pitch was replaced by a running track-type tennis court and the lions waiting to chop off your legs when trying to make a shot were replaced by seagulls (but far more friendly to be honest). The tie started with me and Rickard playing against my old acquaintance Ben Leslie and Jockelson. After losing the first set quite rapidly (6-3), we managed to play better tennis in the second set and took it with 6-2. What our opponents did not know was that what we are not impressed by these tense moments and we comfortably (or not) secured a 10-8 win in the match tiebreak. My singles match against Ben Leslie brought back some bad memories from the last season but I was determined to perform better this time. It wasn’t the case, as my trade mark forehands and serves were constantly slowed down by that annoying court: unplayable. In addition, I must thank to that moronic crowd that were calling themselves Dundee supporters for cheering on my most rudimental mistakes… probably somebody took them from a football match or that was their first contact with tennis… poor effort. I lost it 6-2 7-5 and with that my undefeated singles record for this season was ruined. Still, a 13-1 singles record and a 22-5 overall record (I will refuse to count that doubles match when we were kicked out of the court as a defeat). The incredible performance of Rob and Rickard pushed us to a shootout…the perfect opportunity for the self-proclaimed “doubles shootout after a singles lose specialist” to step in. I don’t remember much of the tiebreak (completely hypnotized by the possible gold medal) but I do remember that at 1-1, I and Cammy were 9-8 up … decisive moment. Brilliant serve from Cammy then I made a volley with a cricket procedure (Rob probably knows better) to finally see Cammy with the opportunity to close it with a smash on a high ball… he did it (somehow… not entirely sure at this moment) and we started some wild celebrations… Good job boys! There are some rumors that the University is planning to erect 4 natural-sized statues of us to commemorate that glorious day… or at least a proper email from the Sports Union would do it. It was a glorious season for the Men’s First Team: League Champions and Cup Winners… we must continue our performance next season in Tier 1. In the end, special thanks to Mummy and Granny Nicol for feeding us with luxurious food and therefore supporting the success of our team. Until next season, Forza Aberdeen!
