As a result of this decision, super PACs like the plaintiff in the case, New York Progress and Protection PAC, will be able to pollute city and state races with unlimited cash, as the group wanted to do in support of Joseph Lhota’s mayoral campaign last fall. Originally, as state documents show, the main donor to the group was going to be Shaun McCutcheon, the Alabama businessman whose resistance to sensible limits led to the recent high court case. But he wound up giving only $20,000, instead of the $200,000 he had originally pledged. The super PAC, which was set up to test the legality of the state limit, had no trouble finding other donors, however. Guess who put up $200,000 of the $230,000 it raised? — That’s right, David Koch, the industrialist whose toxic cash will now begin seeping into right-wing politics around New York State.
