SCOURING KIDS I just answered an email from somewhere (they forgot to say what country) about a scouring month old kid (1 of 2 kids being reared). My advice was: - first get a diagnosis e.g. get a vet to test faeces for coccidia etc - giving electrolyte solutions by not with milk, but in a separate feed - give milk feeds as the kid still needs nutrition - give half a junket tablet to help the milk clot just after a milk feed - ensure high protein and energy solid feed is given little and often eg quality hay and good high energy and protein grain mix - have clean palatable water available ad lib - keep warm and comfortable - keep an eye on dehydration - ie pick up a pinch of skin and let it go, it should quickly go back into place. if it doesnt the kid is dehydrated. Also look at the eyes, if they look sunken, the kid is dehydrated. Compare this kid with a normal kid of the same age. If dehydrated and wont drink the electrolyte solution, then it needs to be stomach tubed or have a drip started by your vet (under the skin is fine unless very badly dehydrated, in which case the vet will give into a vein). - if any nervous signs, give 1/2 teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate as a paste with a bit of water What nursing advice would you give?
