SDF partys decision to rename BB Gooroong Marg at Chakung after party worker Arun Rai, who was a victim of electoral violence in the last elections, has come in for some criticism. SKM has protested against the ‘injustice and humiliation’ meted out to Gooroong, a former chief minister and recipient of the ‘Sikkim Sewa Ratna’, the state’s highest civilian award. The party contends that the road was renamed because of Gooroong’s support to SKM in the 2014 elections. In a press conference held yesterday, SKM MLAs said that there were other roads in Chakung which could have been renamed, but by picking one already named after Mr. Gooroong, SDF was humiliating a veteran politician. The road had been named after former Chief Minister, BB Gooroong in 2003. “The decisions and activities done by the SDF government are all based on political vengeance,” said the SKM MLAs, asking that the ruling party name another road in memory of late Arun Rai and not indulge in revenge politics.
