SEARCH IS ON FOR NEW RESCUERS - Berwick Coastguard is looking for volunteers to strengthen its Coastguard rescue team. The team form part of the 3,500-strong Coastguard Rescue Service, whose 380 teams provide a 24/7 emergency response to search and rescue incidents around the UK coastline, besides carrying out a range of other duties. Aged 18 or over, prospective recruits will undergo medical/fitness screening and have a full UK driver’s licence. After completing basic training in search and rescue, recruits will qualify in rope rescue and water rescue. The Team meet/train weekly, usually on a Thursday evening and on some weekends for specialist training. Personal protective equipment and uniform is provided. Although this voluntary role is not employment, we do pay expenses for call-out, training and some other essential duties at national minimum wage. Working closely with other emergency services and maritime search and rescue resources, teams can be tasked to a variety of incidents. These can include cliff rescues, vulnerable person searches, people stranded by the tide or at risk of drowning, small craft in difficulties and found explosive ordnance. Chris Coulter, Senior Coastal Operations Officer, said: “We expect a high level of commitment from all our team members, both in terms of regular attendance at training sessions and response to incidents.” “Coastguard rescue teams are on-call on a 24-hours basis, which means making sacrifices in their personal lives. We also encourage employers to allow CROs to leave the workplace to attend incidents, when necessary.” “They should live in or within reasonable travelling distance of the rescue station, with own transport being essential.” The Coastguard Rescue Service also plays a key role in preventing loss of life at sea and improving maritime safety by participating in PR events, providing safety talks to youngsters and community groups and undertaking coastal patrols. Anyone interested in serving their local community by becoming part of this front-line emergency please send us a private message.
