SEARCH TIPS: Its good to carry a stick or cane to move foliage and brush. Always bring drinking water and sunscreen if needed. Layered clothing for weather. Advise someone close to you where you will be and what time you will arrive home, then check in with them when you return. If you see anything you think could be evidence, dont touch. You can use a colored ribbon on a wire stake to mark the location or tie a ribbon to some foliage. If you are only photographing and not having police respond its helpful to get GPS coordinates if able. You can email photos to police with the GPS location. If you come upon something that is or may have been a crime scene, again dont touch anything, step back. Alert team leader if you have one, or alert Murray PD and have one or more persons stay there to keep people away until police arrive. You may need to place people in locations as markers to direct police to a location. It is good to have a phone number for one of the detectives that you can call directly on search day rather than calling the main number or 911. These get dispatched, media hears it on scanner and responds. Police do not want media getting there before they can tape off a scene for processing. If you are outside Murray PDs jurisdiction you would contact the department in that jurisdiction. If you feel this could be related to Kayelyns case its good to also contact Murray PD. Its a good idea to keep a map of areas that have been searched, online if possible for reference by new searchers. If anyone has more tips, please post. This is just off the top of my head.
