SEARCHING FOR WORDS I have begun the search for words, Attempting to avoid cliché; But hoping for something powerful, While showing you that my sentiments Have grown soft in your absence. So I search through volumes Of dictionaries and thesauruses Trying to formulate phrases Both descriptive and illustrative, Picturesque words that invoke emotion. Now that word, emotion, Was always one that I avoided before, And now I am clumsy with it, Like Shaq with a microphone Or Jordan with a baseball bat. I approach emotion warily, Treating it as any other stranger; But now sentiment sits on my shoulder Telling me it is O.K., Encouraging me to continue to seek the words, Other words that emotion may introduce me to. But for right now I am a poet Seeking to be less poetic Because sentiment and emotion know no rhyme, Only reason, And the only words I know now are, “I miss us.” - J.D. “2004”
