SEASON 13, EPISODE 5 After an incredible career which started back in 1988 when David Suchet first began preparing for the role, the Poirot series finally came to an end in 2013. Curtain: Poirot’s Last Case was the final Poirot novel Agatha Christie published in 1974, but it had been written during the Second World War. Fearing she might not survive the bombing of London, she wrote two manuscripts, a Poirot and a Marple (Sleeping Murder), and gave them to her husband, Max Mallowan, and only daughter, Rosalind Hicks. Curtain famously includes the death of the great detective. While Agatha Christie had become disenchanted with him, her publishers and the reading public were not ready to let the little Belgian go quite yet. As a result, the manuscripts were locked in a safe until the seventies. The story itself follows a weakened and aged Poirot, approaching the end of his life, as he attempts to catch a criminal who he has already identified. Bedridden, the physical task of investigating is passed on to Hastings, as it was in so many of the cases they solved together. The episode had to be filmed first out of the final series, due to the incredible weight-loss required of Suchet in preparation for the role and also the emotional strain of ending the life of a character he had played for so long. In interview, Suchet admitted, Considering the outcome of the final film it would have been very difficult for me psychologically to leave Poirot in this way. He is a brilliant, yet profoundly complicated character and Ive always enjoyed playing him. The screenplay was adapted by Kevin Elyot and directed by Hettie McDonald. When the episode aired, it was followed by Being Poirot, a documentary in which David Suchet explores the complicated nature of Poirot and the relationship he has built with the character. Suchet described Poirot as “almost a real person. He is the person who was responsible for my life for twenty-five years. He is my invisible, closest and best friend.”
