SECOND TRIMESTER DEADLIFTS!! 115KG for 8 reps (still not lifting heavy :) I just want to share some of my thoughts with you all about Lifting & Pregnancy and the fears that I had before I begun this beautiful journey. :) For so long, one of my fears (besides what pregnancy would do to my body shape during and after) was - Will I still be able to train for the whole 9 months?? For so long I believed the myth that I wouldnt be able to deadlift, or squat, or lift some moderately decent weights and that Id be limited to just yoga and walking (not that theres anything wrong with yoga and walking - I love them both!). My mum constantly tells me to Be careful no more lifting weights now! she says, and Remember I almost miscarried at the 8th month when I lifted a 2 year old toddler when pregnant - SO DONT LIFT ANY MORE WEIGHTS!! Sigh....... yes mum! :) What my mum and many other concerned individuals fail to realize is that I am a trained strength athlete, I have competed in Powerlifting for almost 4 years (lifted weights for almost 15years) and my body is used to a certain level of conditioning. My pregnancy to date has fortunately been low risk. I have still been able to maintain my training simply by scaling back my weights and not lifting anywhere near as heavy as I used to. By no means am I saying that ALL women should be lifting this amount of weight during their pregnancy, however I just want to share my journey with you all and just show you what is still possible while being pregnant. My Powerlifting baby is never put in any danger. I ALWAYS listen to my body! If Im tired I amend my training or I simply take a rest day. I always stay well hydrated and I never strain to the point where it becomes a danger to my Little Powerlifters safety. Some of the benefits of strength training while pregnant are: a) a stronger back b) it helps to maintain or increase bone density c) a preservation of lean mass c) builds/maintains mental stamina and toughness for labour d) stress reduction and an enhanced self image d) faster recovery after delivery e) maintaining and gaining a healthy amount of weight (and not excess fat accumulation) and many more that are too long to list! :) I intend to stay STRONG AND HEALTHY for the next 6 months leading up to the big day. I just want to say a big thank you to my mum and to all the individuals that have voiced their concern. WE are okay. Baby and I are doing extremely well. WE are HAPPY, HEALTHY and of course STRONG!! ;)
