SEE A PET THAT LOOKS LOST? Never assume a wandering animal has been abandoned until you’ve made an effort to find the owners. Knock on some nearby doors; people in the area may recognize the animal or have other information to offer. If possible, drive around a short distance or post some fliers. Do as many of the items on our “Found a pet?” tips at on.fb.me/WWLlAl as you can. While well-intended, re-homing an animal or turning it over to a rescue organization without having first made (and documented) a good-faith effort to find the owners, can also get you accused of stealing. So for your protection, and for the well-being of the animal and its family if it has one, please make that effort. If you can’t do anything to try to find the owners, it is best to leave the animal where it is, and just make a "sighting" post about it here and on other social media like Craigslist, email lists, etc. If the animal is in danger and you are not in a position to remove it from the dangerous situation without risking your own safety, the best thing to do in that case is to call animal control. Better for someone to have the chance to redeem their animal from the pound, than to have to retrieve their pet’s remains from the side of the road.
