SEEFOR TO ENGAGE MORE YOUTHS IN PUBLIC WORKS The State Employment and Expenditure for Results (SEEFOR) Project is to employ more youths and women before the end of 2014. This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mr. Gogo Levi Charles in his office while receiving a delegation of SEEFOR Project Task Team from the World Bank who were in the State for Implementation Support Mission. Mr. Charles said several youths and women have been engaged through direct labour in public works, and grants have also been given to cooperatives in communities to finance their Community Driven Development Initiatives. He said the government under the leadership of Rt. Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is desirous to get youths off the street and expressed optimism that this project will help to reduce unemployment in the State. The Commissioner said that the Project has a formidable team implementing various aspects of the project and commended the World Bank Team for the visit. In his speech, the Task Team Leader, Mr. Jens Kristensen said the team was in the state to assess what the implementing agencies had done in the past six months and to offer technical support where necessary. He expressed the hope that before the end of the Project which has a five year life span, about 30,000 people would benefit from it. Speaking at the kick-off meeting of the Support Mission with MDAs, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Sir Promise Njiowhor informed the Team that the State government is committed to the project and pays it counterpart fund regularly. He assured the Team that SEEFOR Project will be officially launched in the State before the end of 2014. The State Project Coordinator, Mr. Kelcious Amos in his remark revealed that evaluation would soon be concluded for engagement of contractors for 72 lots in waste management activities, adding that over 800 youths will be engaged and deployed to various locations in the State for Waste Management. Mr. Amos stated that the State Employment and Expenditure for Results (SEEFOR) Project became effective in Rivers State in November 2013 and has since employed about 700 youths and women for road maintenance in various areas in the State. The Project has also disbursed N24m to each of the six selected Technical, Vocational and Agricultural Training (TVAT) Institutions in the State to up-grade the facilities in the institutions to properly equip graduates for employment at the end of their trainings. On Community Driven Development (CDD), he said the project has also disbursed fund for cooperatives in communities in some LGAs in the State which include Obio/Akpor, Asari-Toru, Opopo/Nkoro, Emohua, Etche, Ikwerre and Bonny.
