SEEING THE FOREST FOR THE TREES It might be helpful to define the parameters of Torah in light of what Yeshua taught concerning greater and lesser commandments. This was a new concept in his day as the religious teachers taught that all of the commandments were equally important. This is also one of the reasons that the people were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. The 613 commandments of Torah fall into three categories. Mishpatim - [ordinances, judgements - rational commandments], Chukim [statutes - irrational commandments], Eduyot [appointed times]. What did Yeshua emphasize in his teachings? Did he explain how to prepare the tzitzit or mezuzah? Did he teach on the ceremonial law of the Temple? Did he explain irrational commandments like kashrut? Did he cover the subject of taharat bayit [purity of the home]? Did he teach how to keep the appointed times [festival days]? Did he discuss the mikveh [baptism]? What did Yeshua emphasize more than anything else? Yeshua emphasized These Things - The Ten Commandments in the context of Righteousness more than anything else. And he declared that his teaching was not his own, but rather the doctrine of the only true G-d that sent him. Review the Sermon on the Mount and youll see that his teaching was grounded in the words that G-d spoke to all Israel at Mount Sinai. Maybe it will help to point doubters in this direction when discussing the Torah lifestyle and prevent needless distractions like do you wear cotton and wool together or do you support capital punishment for rebellious sons. After all, Yeshua didnt teach on these things so why discuss them?
