SELBORNE EDGE QUEENS IN THRILLER Queens were held out at 19-10 by Selborne as a physical thriller ended in sour altercations. KAMVA SOMDYALA reports Lets get one thing straight: It was always going to be a physical match and thats exactly what the spectacle produced. The physical exchanges in the opening stanza of the match belonged to Queens with big hits knocking players off their feet. It was magical to see. Hit after hit. The Whites however, were pinned in their own 22m line for a while and phases of attack by Selborne eventually led to a try and so they [Selborne] were on the board first, and piled on the numbers on the board as the scoreline hit 19-0 by the end of the first half with the third try from Selborne coming from great attacking play by Selborne and inter-linking by inside centre David Brits and 8th manJason Steyn, who went over for the score. The 7-0 scoreline tells of Selbornes threat, but not The Whites physical dominance, yet, they had nothing to show for it Selborne were then awarded a controversial try. Brits try should not have been allowed when he clearly knocked the ball on. However, it was awarded and Selborne led 14-0. Selborne were lent great deal by the discipline of their tactical kicking owing to the boot of their full back Liam McLoughlin. It must be highlighted that hooker Uhuru Vanda wasnt having the best game of his life with his throwing due to the wind (we make no excuses) and clearly Queens couldnt attack because there was no platform to do so. With the 2nd half off to a blank start, both teams looked to attack with Selborne looking dangerous in loose play, however an improved defensive effort by Queens kept them at bay and forced numerous errors. Queens will lament their own missed chances as camps in Selborne territory was followed by poor ball security by Queens and turnovers were the order of the day as a result. Add to that, the lack of support runners when a player had burst into space. Queens were dealt a heavy blow when they lost their captain Avela Jubase (he returned after about 5 minutes) to injury - he was replaced by Yaw Penxe who would have scored a brilliant try had a pass from Johan van Heerden not been judged to have been forward. A turnover ball gave Queens an attacking chance - and boy did they take it. Quick reaction from the backline moved the ball to Jerry Danquah who gassed players on his inside to score under the poles. Leroy Kuyler slotted the easy conversion and added a penalty soon thereafter to make it 19-10 to Selborne. It all happened in the last minute of the game as an altercation got ugly. James Roberts was the guilty party and he received his marching orders.
