Many of the characters in the novel are a part of the life of his village. Written in lyrical prose, the novel captures the changing mood and seasons of the landscape of Sethu, the protagonist’s village. The river, a mute witness of every crisis in Sethu’s life. The Sambadham system of marriage followed by the Nair community, in which men entered into contractual relationships with their wives and visited them in their houses. Sethu’s aunt, Cheriamma, has two visiting husbands. Real protagonist of the novel is the ‘time’ itself. The ceaseless flow of time that shapes Sethu’s life, alienating him from everyone and everything he loves and carrying him from one mistake to the next.
