SEMINAR Title: Studying Mathematics in English as a Foreign Language Speaker: Prof Bill Barton, Professor in Mathematics Education and Associate Dean in International Affairs Time and Place: Thursday 20 March, 4pm-5pm at MLT3 (first floor, Building 303) How do our language skills impact our understanding of mathematics? Bill will tell us about how knowing other languages can assist us to learn, the language barriers in understanding mathematics, and will give us some techniques to overcome these barriers. If: - you are studying mathematics at any level and your first language is not English, or - you are planning to go on exchange to study mathematics in a language different from your first language, or - you are simply interested in knowing about aspects of studying in different languages …then this seminar is for YOU! Come along and enjoy the 15-minute talk and 15-minute question/discussion session. After that, continue the discussion with your fellows or enjoy yourself, having some nibbles!
