SENATOR CHUCK SCHUMER PROMISES IMMIGRATION REFORM WILL HAPPEN THIS YEAR Sen. Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York and a chief architect of the Comprehensive Immigration Bill which passed through the Senate last summer, predicted that immigration reform WILL PASS THIS YEAR. At the 12th annual Daily News/CUNY Citizenship NOW!, a call-a-thon where hundreds of volunteers, including lawyers and law students, offer free, confidential citizenship and immigration information to callers, Schumer addressed press and participating members passionately declaring that we are going to pass that bill and sign it into law this year. We will have an immigration bill -- it may not be exactly the Senate bill -- on the floor of the House. We will come to an agreement. They will put that bill on the Presidents desk for President Obama to sign into law, Schumer said. He went on to say that the Republican Party knows being seen as anti-immigrant will severely damage their reputation with the American people and that Republican leadership is trying to convince the rank and file to bring a bill to the House floor. While these words remain optimistic rhetoric, there are few lawmakers who have been as closely involved in the Immigration debate from the beginning as Sen. Schumer. He possesses a unique perspective and successfully managed to work with Republican Senators in drafting an Immigration Bill that passed through the Senate almost a year ago.
