SENATOR DWIGHT BULLARD SELECTED TO LEAD FLORIDA LEGISLATIVE BLACK CAUCUS TALLAHASSEE – Today Senator Dwight Bullard (D-39) announced his newest role as incoming Chair of the Florida Legislative Black Caucus, an organization dedicated to championing issues and legislation of importance to the black community throughout Florida. “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to serve as the Legislative Black Caucus chair,” Senator Bullard stated. “We have made incredible strides thus far and I look forward to continuing to elevate the dialogue and needs of our diverse caucus.” Senator Bullard will succeed Representative Alan Williams (D-Tallahassee) who led the caucus from May of 2013. A public school teacher named two years in a row as “Champion of the Middle Class,” Senator Bullard was elected to the Senate in 2012 after serving in the Florida House of Representatives. His term as Black Caucus Chair will run from May 1, 2014 until the conclusion of the 2015 Legislative Session. “I’m thankful to my colleagues for entrusting me with the chairmanship of the Black Caucus for this next year,” he said. “It’s my hope that both House and Senate members will join me in engaging communities throughout Florida and move the agenda of African-Americans forward. I also look forward to input from the community on tackling issues at the local, state and even national level. I’m grateful for the vote of confidence and excited to get to work.” The Florida Legislative Black Caucus, comprised of the African American members of the Legislature, has served as the Capitol’s voice for the minority community for over 30 years. Its priorities include minority health disparities, judicial and gubernatorial appointments, restoration of civil rights, the disproportionate incarceration of African Americans, adequate funding of historically black colleges and universities as well as lawmakers’ compliance with their constitutional obligation to support high quality public education in Florida’s K-12 schools, and boosting state investment in minority businesses to spur greater job creation.
